The best time to deal with a blocked drain is before it becomes an emergency. When you’re having an emergency because of a drain blockage, there will be more significant issues, such as:
- Added stress
- Costlier emergency service
- Property damage
- Expensive cleanup fees
Unfortunately, things seem to go wrong at the worst times. The last thing you want to happen is a total sewer backup on the weekend, when you are hosting an event, or when extended family drops by for a visit. Ignoring a problem will almost always result in the added stress of needing immediate costly emergency service.
If you need help with a drain blockage or any other drain issue, B&P Environmental can help. We answer our phone twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year. Our B&P Environmental team has decades of combined experience, so we are ready to help or answer any questions you may have. Allowing a plumbing issue to get out of hand to the point of an overflow almost always results in property damage and a potentially very expensive cleanup. The best defense against a drain blockage is identifying the signs that something is wrong with your drain before a blockage occurs.
Signs of a Drain Blockage
There are often signs and symptoms that can be recognized before a catastrophic drain blockage. Some of the most common signs of a drain blockage include:
- Toilet fills up when you run the sink
- Multiple fixtures are clogged or slow draining
- Toilet does not flush, or it gurgles
- Bathtub or shower fills with water when other fixtures are used or drained
- Water is seen coming out of a cleanout outside the house
All plumbing fixtures are ultimately tied together and leave the property to go to either a septic system or the city or county sewer system. Problems with multiple fixtures could indicate a localized problem either inside the home or property or a main line problem leaving the property.
When a problem is localized, it may be possible to still use other fixtures in the home. However, if this is a main line issue, any water that goes down the drain will back up somewhere, always at the lowest point as water follows gravity. It is important to be very careful and call the drain cleaner as soon as possible! You may not notice that a cleanout cap is loose in the basement or the utility closet or that a fixture downstairs had a slight leak. In such cases, you may suddenly discover a large puddle of sewer water has leaked out, and you will then have an additional problem to address.
